Creating an A.A. Milne Piglet

In setting out to create a collection of amigurumi patterns fashioned after a widely beloved children's story, I certainly set myself up.

Slapping together quick patterns that *somewhat* resemble the characters is not a wise shortcut to make; often multiple prototypes are needed to work out the problem spots or shaping issues. This collection has been no exception.

The most delightful piece of the process has been skimming through E.H. Shepard's original images of the characters and basking in the whimsy and beauty of his depictions. Whether or not you grew up having these original stories read to you or not ( I did not), the sweetness and innocence of the tales are a wonderful refreshment in a fearful world.

After making my Pooh bear pattern I faced the dilemma of which character to try next. Owl's colorwork and barring on his plumage could be a lovely challenge, but perhaps too intimidating for a newer crochet artist. Kanga's shaping and fitting a perfect Roo could be a lovely brain puzzle, but still perhaps a trifle intimidating. Eeyore's mournful posture? But who is Pooh's most consistant and sought for companion?

Piglet...

The next design must be Piglet!

My first attempt at shaping his body and head in one piece created a problem in that his nose shape was blocky and perhaps resembled a real pig on a farm, but didn't fit this timid creature staring at me from the story book.

The second attempt starting with his nose and worked its way down:

With that challenging piece of his physiognomy has been conquered, I think the rest of this little friend will come along quickly and a follow up pattern will be posted.

I hope you stick around to try it and let me know what you think!

May all your making become an opportunity for shenanigans and spreading joy!
