The Double Crochet ( DC) Stitch Guide

follettwife

Greetings Fellow Crafting Enthusiasts!

Today I'd like to explain and show the mechanics of the double crochet ( dc)Stitch. It is one of the most common stitches and being familiar with it will be helpful in the future.

If you have been following along with the 3 Stitch Sampler Washcloth pattern, you will be familiar with the half double crochet (hdc) stitch that is the baby sister stitch to the dc stitch. They share similarities in formation with two distinct differences.

First, the dc needs a starting/turning chain of 3 chains to have the necessary height for the stitch when starting a new row:

Next, you need to turn your work and yarn over (yo) before inserting your hook into the first stitch, the same way you would work a half double crochet(hdc) stitch:

Yarn over (yo) again and pull the yarn through so that you have 3 strands of yarn on the hook:

Then, as with the hdc stitch, we yarn over and pull through the first two loops, leaving two loops on the hook:

Yarn over again and pull the yarn through both loops left on the hook:

Voila! A double crochet stitch! Repeat this process across to the opposite end of the row, rinse and repeat the process!

Here's a video showing the process in real time, plus the optional sc stitch border around the edge:

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for project tutorials you'd like to see next and I will put them in the queue!

(I will also have a printable pattern for this washcloth posted shortly ( I'm still getting a new laptop set up with programs for streamlining that process).

Until next time!
