What is a Half Double Crochet (HDC) Stitch, And What Would I Need It For?

follettwife

As you continue to traverse the world of crochet stitches and their numerous acronyms and combinations, one of the first ones you may hear about is a half double crochet stitch (hdc).

This stitch is different from the single crochet (sc) in complexity by one simple step: an extra yarn over in the middle.

When starting a row of hdc stitches, you'll need to give yourself 2 chains for a turning stitch, as the hdc stitch is significantly taller than an sc stitch and having a short turning chain could make your project wonkier and more misshapenon the edges than you'd like.

After you've given yourself a turning chain and flipped your work in the proper direction, you'll yarn over (yo) before inserting your hook for the first stitch of the row:

You then insert your hook, yarn over, pull the yarn through and have 3 loops on the hook:

To finish the hdc, you yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook:

It does eats up more yarn than a single crochet stitch, so why would you possibly want to use it? In all honesty, because sometimes when you've been working on a large project with sc stitches, you feel like you've been working on it for an eternity only to see you may only have made a few inches worth of progress.

Interspersing a little extra texture and interest to the projects appearance, as well as adding extra height, can give you a boost of encouragement to reach the end.

Here is a YouTube video for this stitch and portion of the sampler project:

Please feel free to leave any comments or questions about this stitch, or any other crochet question you have, you can also reach me through the "contact" page here on the blog. I'd love to hear from you and help you any way I can!

I will do my best to get part three editing and posted as soon as possible, I'm learning some new skills and programs on the tech side and that wheel grinds slower than I'd like! In the meantime I hope you keep persevering and practicing with these stitches, having a strong foundation in the basics will be so helpful later on!

Until next time!
